On Feb. 5, Carle Place’s Cherry Lane and Rushmore Avenue schools participated in Global Play Day, a day filled with games, arts and crafts and other activities aimed to encourage social interaction and problem-solving skills without the use of screens. Students at both schools spent the day playing board games and creating projects as a team, allowing the students to explore their creativity and teamwork.

“Play is essential for children’s development, fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and social interactions,” said Lauren Moriarty, principal of Cherry Lane School. “Global Play Day encourages unstructured, screen-free play, allowing students to explore and learn through spontaneous experiences. By giving children the freedom to direct their own play, they build independence, resilience, and critical thinking skills that support lifelong learning.”

“We were so excited to bring the Global Day of Play back to Rushmore for the first time since 2020,” said Catherine Silletti, principal of Rushmore Avenue School. “Now, more than ever, it is essential to encourage our children to explore their creativity and problem-solving skills in unstructured, social settings. Sometimes good, old-fashioned games are exactly what we all need.”
