Students holding certificates

In honor of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science on Feb. 11, 16 Rushmore Avenue students participated in the Institute for Advanced Computational Science’s (IACS) challenge at Stony Brook University to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women in science and engineering.

These young female scientists chose a scientist or engineer that inspired her, researched their findings and selected an experiment related to that field of study. The day’s highlights featured engaging student projects: exploring Marie Curie’s discoveries on radioactive decay through a coin toss experiment, learning about the DNA double helix structure by extracting DNA from strawberries in honor of Rosalind Franklin, and investigating aerodynamics with paper airplanes to celebrate Mary Jackson’s contributions to NASA’s mission.

After their research, students created videos showcasing what they had learned and demonstrated their experiments. Their dedication and enthusiasm for learning about influential women in science was truly inspiring. Congratulations to all the young scientists for their hard work and creativity.
