The Carle Place Board of Education appointed Dr. Christine A. Finn as the district’s Superintendent of Schools, beginning July 1, 2019.
She had served as Superintendent of Schools in the Shelter Island Union Free School District, and simultaneously served as Principal of the district’s K-12 building. In this role, Dr. Finn managed multiple academic departments as well as the administrative cabinet, while also overseeing all aspects of budget development. She had set goals with teachers, departments and the Board of Education, including strategic planning sessions, and has led collective bargaining negotiations with all units.
Under her leadership, Shelter Island experienced improved instructional outcomes. She has enhanced STEM and literacy education, improved safety and security measures, increased grant funding and earned Blue Ribbon recognition for her schools. As a result of her work, she has been honored by numerous school-based organizations, including the PTA.
Dr. Finn served as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Personnel in Carle Place from September 2010 until December 2014. She was instrumental in overseeing, and often enhancing, many of the programs and opportunities that students enjoy today. She attributes much of her success to her experiences in Carle Place, including connecting community organizations to the work performed in the schools, and said she is thrilled for the opportunity to do this again as Superintendent in Carle Place.
“I am delighted to be returning to Carle Place, a district that taught me the true meaning of community,” Dr. Finn said. “I look forward to continuing the tradition of educational excellence that I so fondly remember from my time there.”
Before working in Carle Place and Shelter Island, Dr. Finn served as Assistant Superintendent, Principal and Assistant Principal in the Patchogue-Medford School District. She also served as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in the Herricks School District and has more than 14 years of classroom experience. Dr. Finn holds a Doctorate in Education from St. John’s University, a professional diploma in education administration, a Master of Science in elementary education and Bachelor of Arts in English education from LIU Post.
